In the heart of Stockholm, where Scandinavian minimalism reigns supreme, a bold and colorful transformation has taken place. The Swedish interior design and architecture firm Studio Ramson has breathed new life into an old apartment, turning it into a vibrant and international haven. The project, located in the historic Östermalm district, was a challenge from the start: to create a home that felt international, a far cry from the typical Scandi minimalism. But Studio Ramson rose to the task, delivering a space that is both cozy and elegant, inviting and sophisticated, and tactfully polychromatic.
The key to this transformation was a simple yet powerful move: turning the old service corridor into the apartment's new architectural spine. By keeping the original layout intact, the designers created a narrow passageway lined with oak-clad paneling, a continuous and tactile element that runs through the entire space. This simple change introduced a distinct atmosphere and sense of identity, turning what was once an unremarkable passage into one of the apartment's defining spaces.
The color palette, inspired by the surrounding façades, is warm and earthy, with deep pinks, rich bronzes, creamy beiges, and bright shades of blue. This contemporary expression anchors the apartment within its environment, but with a unique twist. The ceiling heights were subtly adjusted to create a calmer, more cohesive rhythm, and the apartment was fully upgraded, from the kitchen to the bathroom, with no original features retained.
The result is a space that is both layered and intimate, enveloping and warm. The client, a globetrotting father with two children, describes the final product as cozy and elegant, inviting and sophisticated, and tactfully polychromatic. It's a far cry from the apartment's past form, which held a weaker sense of identity. Today, the apartment is a stronger, more confident space, with a clear sense of soul and character.
What makes this project particularly fascinating is the way it challenges the notion of Scandinavian minimalism. By embracing color and texture, Studio Ramson has created a space that is both international and Swedish, a perfect blend of old and new.
